Horizon Awards Scholarships
Dreams Coming True
Three African young adults were recent recipients of Horizon scholarships, thanks to the generosity of American donors.
Andile Magxalisa is from Kayamandi Township, Western Cape Province, South Africa. He was one of the very first eight kids Horizon ever sponsored. A veteran of the Kuyasa Kids Choir and Dance Team, Andile has toured the United States from 2005 to 2008, missing last year to concentrate on his studies so he could graduate from Kayamandi High School.
Because of his scholarship, Andile is now enrolled in a diploma course in Social Development. When he completes this two-year course, he will receive a Certificate in Auxiliary Social Work. This Certificate will qualify him to study at the university level, where he plans to pursue a degree in Social Work. His goal is to be a Social Worker, perhaps on the staff of Kuyasa Horizon Empowerment in Kayamandi.
Thandeka Mtshali, better known as Lungi, is from KwaZulu-Natal Province, in South Africa. She is one of Kate Bain’s dependable team at Izulu Orphan Projects, a role that has taken on added importance with the passing this last December of Chadd.
Lungi is enrolled in her second year of studies at the University of South Africa, where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the field of education. Her goal is to be a teacher.
“In my area (Zulu tribal homelands),” Luni writes, “there is such a need for teachers who are driven by ministry calling.”
Regarding her role at Izulu Orphan Projects, she says, “The thing that most attracted me about this work is doing the work of God. I get the opportunity to tell people about Jesus and to motivate teenagers, especially because some of them experience difficulties and situations I have passed through in Christ.”
The third recipient is Ambrose Alijuna who grew up in Fort Portal, Uganda. He has been sponsored by Horizon since the inception of the ministry in his area in 2005.
Ambrose is currently enrolled at Kyambogo University in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, where he is pursuing a two-year degree in mechanical engineering.
These young adults are being empowered to pursue their dreams because of Horizon friends who donate to the University Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Each year in January, Horizon’s Board of Directors evaluates the status of the invested Fund, and determines the percentage to award to students. This year, the amount was 6%.
