Update on Kate Bain:  Turning tragedy into opportunities for orphan care

It isn’t what happens to us that counts; it’s how we handle what happens to us that makes the difference in the long run.

Kate Bain lost her husband Chadd in early December, 2009, the result of a tragic accident.  She was left to care for their two young children and two orphaned Zulu teenagers whom they had adopted.

At the time of Chadd’s death, he and Kate were the founding directors of Izulu Orphan Projects, one of Horizon International’s orphan care partners in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

Many in Kate’s situation would have abandoned the orphan care ministry and focused exclusively on the needs of her immediate family.

Not Kate!

Instead, as she grieved the passing of her husband, she honored his memory by taking advantage of the opportunities that came from the extensive media coverage that resulted from his death.

Shelley, Chadd’s mom, soon joined Kate full-time bringing with her years of invaluable experience working with children.  She is currently working on an early childhood development program in a number of rural Zululand schools.  Three jungle gyms have been purchased and installed so far this year.

Kate and her team have partnered with the Community Works Program of the Zululand Center for Sustainable Development which creates employment opportunities for older orphans and their caregivers.

As a result, Kate’s administrative staff has increased from three at the end of 2009 to fifteen currently.

Some of the projects this team is facilitating include the making of mud bricks to build huts for orphans, developing community gardens with irrigation systems, and so on.

Thanks to ongoing corporate donations, Izulu is feeding six hundred orphans in 210 family units through the distribution of monthly food parcels.

“Most importantly,” according to Kate, “our monthly church services are going well.  These are such great times of thanks and celebration.”

Kate is quick to share that the best cared-for orphans in their system are those who are sponsored through Horizon.

Now, you have an opportunity to sponsor one of the most desperate orphans on Izulu’s extensive registration list.

Thirty-five of these children have been sponsored through Horizon in the last few weeks.  We have another 120 kids available who really need our help.

For $35 a month, you can provide one of these precious children with food, clothing, education, and basic health care.

Remember, it isn’t what happens to us that counts; it’s how we handle what happens to us that makes the difference in the long run.

Thanks, Kate, for teaching all of us how to work through adversity for a greater good!
