When God intervenes in our lives, he does so for a good reason.
Alick and Vidah Phiri have served as Horizon’s Regional Coordinators in the Bulawayo/Matebeleland area of Zimbabwe since late 2004.
They provide front-line care for one hundred Horizon-sponsored orphans in three primary areas—Pelandaba, a poor suburb of the City of Bulawayo; Mbembezi District, and Tsholotsho District.
Thirty-five of these kids have been sponsored in the last twelve months.
From the beginning, the Phiris have provided their own transportation to facilitate the orphan care ministry. Their fifteen-year-old pickup truck finally broke down last October and critical engine parts could no longer be obtained in southern Africa.
Faced with the need of a reliable vehicle, a funding request was submitted on December 15 to Northview Christian Life Church in Carmel, Indiana.
K. Paul Maurer, the church’s Missions Pastor soon informed Bob Pearson, Horizon’s President, that the church would fund the purchase of a used pickup truck.
The next day, on Wednesday, January 20, Pearson called the Phiris to share the good news.
He learned during the phone conversation that the Phiris and other leaders of Bulawayo Baptist Church had been praying and fasting that very week for God’s provision of a vehicle for the orphan ministry.
On the third day of the fast, God answered their prayers in dramatic fashion.
Horizon wired the funds for the truck on Tuesday, February 1.
In an e-mail to Horizon on Thursday, March 3, Alick reported the following:
“We are happy to inform you that we have purchased a truck. We are so excited. Our ministry work will be greatly enhanced.”
Indeed, when God moves, he does so for a good reason.
Now, the Phiris will be able to more effectively minister to the hundred kids under their care.
And, in the very near future, they and their team of volunteers plan to launch three new Afternoon Children’s Clubs through three additional Baptist churches in the area—Pakamani; Rangemoore, another suburb of the City of Bulawayo; and Nkulumani.
The orphans in these Clubs will hopefully be sponsored by Horizon on the Kuyasa Kids Choir Tour of the Northeast during the month of April.
Thank you, God!
