Sekgopo Orphan Drop-in Center Celebrates Grand Opening

Many of the projects worth doing in the world have been declared impossible before they were doneSekgopo Orphan Drop-in Center Grand Opening.

This is certainly true of the Sekgopo Orphan Drop-in Center in Sekgopo Village, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Horizon Thusanang, Horizon International’s affiliate partner in Limpopo, recently celebrated the Grand Opening of this strategic Drop-in Center.

Built in phases at a cost of $450,000 (USD), the Center coordinates the ministries of 206 Horizon-sponsored children and youth living in Sekgopo Village.

The Grand Opening of these incredible facilities was only a dream in November, 2004 when Chief Sekgopo stood with a Horizon delegation at the edge of a large piece of property in the middle of her village.  Sweeping her hand across the valley, she said, “This land is yours to use to care for the orphans.  You can have as much as you need.”

The property was dedicated in July, 2005.  At the direction of Andries van der Merwe, Horizon’s Regional Coordinator in Limpopo, a Bible was placed in each of the four corners of the foundation of the first phase.

The funding for the first two phases was donated by Horizon partner churches, which then sent teams to help locals with the construction.

Later, a funding source within South Africa was identified and the next four phases were  built.

Today, the Sekgopo Orphan Drop-in Center is nearly fully operational.  Home to one of two Afternoon Children’s Clubs in Sekgopo, sponsored kids meet at the Center everyday after school where they learn about Christ, hang out, and are served a nutritious meal.

Center Facilities include a Community Hall that seats 800, a spacious kitchen with every modern convenience, a smaller Hall where the Children’s Club meets, administrative offices, bathrooms, and a future Computer Lab.

The Sekgopo Orphan Drop-in Center has been called the finest facility of its kind in all of Limpopo Province.

Congratulations to Andries and Nelly van der Merwe and their fine team at Horizon Thusanang for their superb ministry to the orphans of Sekgopo Village.

Jesus was right when he said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
